Hygiene expert help “Save The Children” this Christmas

09/12/2008

Every 20 seconds, a child dies as a result of poor sanitation. That’s 1.5 million preventable deaths each year. 17% of infant deaths are caused by diarrhoea of which 90% can be prevented by better hand hygiene

This Christmas, in support of the United Nations International Year of Sanitation, Pink Hygiene Solutions (Australia’s leading washroom hygiene brand) will sponsor sanitation projects in Africa. Through international aid organisation, Save the Children, Pink Hygiene Solutions will donate $2005 to provide five hand washing facilities to primary schools in Africa and educate 21 adolescent girls about proper puberty and hygiene in Ethiopia.

In Australia, proper hand washing can prevent the spread of bad bacteria that could lead to the common cold or illnesses such as gastroenteritis. However, in Africa, proper hand washing can help prevent far more serious diseases and infections such as cholera and diarrohea.

Most people are not aware that basic hand hygiene can help save lives. Hand washing is the single most important way of preventing the spread of infection, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

“We want to make a real difference this Christmas. By providing hygiene education to children, along with proper hand-washing facilities, we believe these gifts will contribute towards the prevention of unnecessary health issues, and in some cases, death” says Paul Cochrane, Managing Director of Pink Hygiene Solutions.

Good sanitation and hand hygiene, together with safe drinking water, have long been recognised as essentials to keeping people healthy. Yet, about 40% of the world’s population do not have access to basic sanitation facilities.

Pink Hygiene Solutions is encouraging all their employees to think of others this Christmas. “Even a small contribution of $2005 can help make a difference to so many lives” says Paul.
